The Amarnath Yatra is unique: a 45-day pilgrimage window each summer to a natural ice Shivalingam inside a Himalayan cave at 3,888m. This guide covers the 2026 window, SASB registration, choosing between the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, and the practical realities of the yatra.

2026 yatra dates

The yatra runs from roughly the first week of July to the second week of August each year โ€” exact dates declared by SASB based on Shravan Purnima. 2026 dates will likely be July 3 to August 19 (confirm on jksasb.nic.in). Registration opens around mid-April 2026. Beyond this window, access to the cave is closed.

Two routes โ€” Pahalgam vs Baltal

PAHALGAM (traditional): โ€ข Distance: 48 km over 5 days (Pahalgam โ†’ Chandanwari โ†’ Sheshnag โ†’ Panchtarni โ†’ Cave) โ€ข Altitude gain: 2,130m โ†’ 3,888m โ€ข Pros: gradual ascent, lower AMS risk, spectacular landscapes, traditional route โ€ข Cons: 5 days commitment, must carry/hire gear BALTAL (shorter, newer): โ€ข Distance: 14 km one-way, completable in 1-2 days โ€ข Steeper: 2,743m โ†’ 3,888m โ€ข Pros: time-efficient, fewer stops โ€ข Cons: higher AMS risk, more strenuous Helicopter from Neelgrath (near Baltal) or Pahalgam: โ‚น2,800-3,800 one-way to Panjtarni, then 6 km foot-trek to the cave.

Registration process (SASB)

Step 1: Get a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) from an SASB-authorized doctor in your city. The list is published on jksasb.nic.in each year (Feb-March). CHC is valid 28 days. Step 2: Register online at jksasb.nic.in OR at a designated PNB/SBI/YES Bank branch. โ‚น220 fee per person. Choose date and route. Step 3: Collect the RFID Yatra Permit Card at Jammu (Saraswati Dham) or Srinagar (Baltal office) a day before your allocated date. You MUST carry the original CHC, registration slip, and ID. Step 4: Start the yatra from your assigned entry point on your assigned date.

Eligibility & health requirements

โ€ข Age: 13-75 years only โ€ข Not permitted: pregnant women (beyond 6 weeks), those with severe heart/lung/kidney/hypertension conditions โ€ข CHC is strictly enforced โ€” 28-day validity from issue date โ€ข At helipad and start of route, health officials check for altitude-distress symptoms Seriously: don't game the CHC. Every year there are cardiac emergencies on this yatra. Start aerobic conditioning 4-6 weeks before.

Day-by-day (Pahalgam route)

Day 0: Arrive Srinagar โ†’ Pahalgam (3h drive) Day 1: Pahalgam โ†’ Chandanwari (16 km by vehicle) โ†’ Pissu Top โ€” Sheshnag (12 km trek) Day 2: Sheshnag โ†’ Panchtarni (12 km trek, crosses Mahagunas Pass 4,500m) Day 3: Panchtarni โ†’ Cave (6 km trek) โ†’ back to Panchtarni Day 4: Panchtarni โ†’ Pahalgam (descent, 2 days condensed if fit) Day 5: Pahalgam โ†’ Srinagar

Frequently asked questions

Is the Amarnath Yatra safe?+

The Indian government and paramilitary forces secure the entire route with a massive deployment each year. Natural risks (AMS, weather, landslides) are genuine โ€” stick to the route, don't rush, listen to SASB officials.

What should I wear?+

Layered warm clothing even in July (nights touch 5ยฐC at higher camps), high-ankle trek shoes (already broken-in โ€” DO NOT buy new ones for this), rain jacket, thermal inner wear, gloves, cap, sunglasses (UV is brutal at altitude).

Are phones allowed in the cave?+

No. Phones, cameras, and metal objects must be left in lockers before cave entry. Security is strict. Only puja materials are allowed.

Can I do the yatra solo?+

Yes โ€” SASB registration is per-individual. But the stretch above Sheshnag is best done in the company of fellow yatris; weather changes fast and the trail is remote.
